[2022-11-12 / 22:00 – 2022-11-13 / 01:30] Madison Mogen and her closest friend, Kaylee Goncalves, spent time at the Corner Club bar in downtown Moscow.

[2022-11-13 / 01:40] Mogen and Goncalves purchased food from the “Grub Truck” food truck in downtown Moscow; their moments there were captured on a Twitch livestream.

[2022-11-13 / 01:56] Mogen and Goncalves were safely dropped off at their rental home at 1122 King Road by a private-party driver.

[2022-11-13 / 02:26 – 02:52] Several unanswered calls were made from Goncalves and Mogen’s phones to Kaylee’s former boyfriend, Jack DuCoeur.

[2022-11-13 / 04:00 – 04:25] Madison Mogen (21) and Kaylee Goncalves (21), who were sleeping together in a bed in the southeastern bedroom on the third floor, were brutally murdered in their sleep by Bryan Kohberger, who had entered the house undetected. Kohberger attacked them with a military-style KA-BAR knife. The killer left a KA-BAR knife sheath immediately to Mogen’s right, which contained a single-source male touch DNA profile.

[2022-11-13 / 11:58] After the surviving roommates called friends to the house, MPD officers responded to a 911 call reporting an unconscious person and discovered the bodies of Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves in their beds.

[2022-11-17] An autopsy conducted by the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the victims had been attacked while asleep. Madison Mogen had sustained multiple stab wounds to her chest and upper body, and her death was ruled a homicide caused by sharp-force injuries.

[2022-12-30] After DNA recovered from the snap button of the knife sheath found beside Mogen was determined to have a familial-level match to DNA obtained from a Q-tip recovered from the trash at the Kohberger family home in Pennsylvania, Bryan Kohberger was arrested during a SWAT raid.

[2023-05-13] At its spring commencement ceremony, the University of Idaho awarded Madison Mogen a posthumous bachelor’s degree in Marketing.

[2023-12-28] Despite objections from the victims’ families, the house at 1122 King Road was completely demolished by the university in an effort to support the community’s healing process.

[2024-08-21] The “Vandal Healing Garden and Memorial,” built on the University of Idaho campus, was officially dedicated in a ceremony. A memorial sculpture at the center of the garden commemorates Madison, Kaylee, Xana, and Ethan in perpetuity.

[2025-07-23] Having avoided the death penalty through a plea agreement, Kohberger was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. During the sentencing hearing, Mogen’s father, Ben Mogen, and stepfather, Scott Laramie, shared their grief through powerful victim impact statements, including a statement read on behalf of her mother, Karen Laramie.

[2026-02-01] The “Made With Kindness” Foundation, established by former roommate Ashlin Couch in memory of Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle, opened scholarship applications for graduates from Kootenai and Spokane Counties.
